We Are Art Too

Hello! My name is Asheley and I am a visual artist. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY where I studied Psychology and School Counseling. Does not sound like art right? Well, becoming an artist was never my main agenda in life because I honestly thought I would not excel in that field. There were several reasons why I came up with that conclusion, one being the financial aspect. I had a preconceived notion of not making money to support myself as an artist. Another reason was my belief in not being good enough as an artist, or no one liking my art or products. Even though, in high school I majored in art and then in college I took an art course, I still felt unfulfilled.      Therefore, I focused on another field that can keep me grounded...so I thought.
Post graduate school, I still felt a void in my life, as if I am meant to go another path. It was until I recently moved to Maryland, where I rediscovered my passion for art. I visited Baltimore City and fell in love with the robust level of art work posted around the city. Almost each block of that city has beautiful artwork on the wall of a building. What was impactful about those artworks was the representation of black people.
Growing up, I never really saw a representation of black people in a positive light. I wished I saw more black woman represented on tv shows, movies, makeup campaigns, or executive jobs to show how beautiful and powerful we are. Due to the lack of such representation, I did not feel empowered as a young black girl. My mission is represent us through the creation of art because...we are art too! I also want to collaborate with other artists and organizations to spread such positivity so our young black girls can see how beautiful they are.
